A brain biopsy is the extraction of a small sample of tissue from the brain to help diagnose or stage an abnormality, such as a tumor, infection or other disorder.
Achieving an accurate biopsy using the conventional stereotactic approach can be challenging, especially when dealing with very small or very deep neurological abnormalities. Due to a lack of real-time visualization, the neurosurgeon must use mathematical algorithms to target where the biopsy should occur. As with all calculations, this process is subject to errors which may be difficult to correct once the biopsy has begun.
